How to Remove a Password From a PDF (If You Know It)
The short answer
You can remove a password from a PDF only if you know the password. Open the PDF in a tool that supports permissions, delete the password, and save a fresh copy. If you don’t know the password, there is no legal way in — and anyone selling you a “cracker” is probably selling malware.
Remove a password you know (the legit way)
- Open the PDF in Chrome, Edge, or any browser. Enter the password — the file opens.
- Hit Print (Ctrl/Cmd + P) and choose “Save as PDF” as the destination.
- Save it under a new name. The new file has no password.

Why the password exists
PDF passwords come in two flavors, and the difference matters:
- Open password — you can’t even view the file without it.
- Permissions password — you can view it, but printing or copying is blocked. That’s a soft lock: the data is right there, so removing it is trivial for any PDF tool.
So if you can open and read the PDF but can’t print or copy it, you’re dealing with a permissions lock — remove it with any editor and move on. If you can’t open the file at all, that’s an open password, and the next section applies.
Forgot the password? The honest part
If you forgot the password to an important PDF, the realistic options are: ask the sender for it, or check whether you stored it in your password manager. That’s it.
I’ll say it straight: tools that claim to “remove PDF passwords” without the password are either guessing weak passwords or are malware. Genuine PDF encryption is real encryption — if it could be broken by a $10 download, banks wouldn’t use it. Anyone who needs that kind of tool and doesn’t have the password is almost certainly trying to access something that isn’t theirs. Don’t be that person, and don’t download that software.
