How to Put a PDF on Kindle (Send to Kindle, Explained)
The short answer
Get a PDF onto a Kindle with the Send to Kindle service: email the file to your Kindle address, or use the Send to Kindle app/website. Amazon converts it into a Kindle format you can read anywhere. The honest caveat: multi-column PDFs and scanned pages read poorly on a 6-inch screen — those are better on a tablet or computer.
Send a PDF to Kindle by email
- Find your Kindle email address: amazon.com → Content & Devices → Devices → your Kindle.
- Add it as an approved sender in your Amazon settings (one-time).
- Email the PDF to that address with “Convert” in the subject line.
- It appears on your Kindle within a few minutes.
The “Convert” subject line matters: it asks Amazon to reflow the PDF for the Kindle screen — the text adjusts to the page size instead of staying in fixed PDF pages.
Send to Kindle from a computer or phone
The website sendtokindle.amazon.com and the mobile app do the same job without email: upload or share the PDF, pick which device, done. If the PDF is in your phone’s share sheet, “Send to Kindle” is often right there — one tap.
What converts well (and what doesn’t)
- Novels and text documents — convert beautifully with reflow. This is the sweet spot.
- Manuals and reports — readable, but images and tables get squished to screen width.
- Scanned PDFs — convert to images of pages, which on a Kindle means zooming in and panning. Painful. If the scan is searchable/OCR’d, slightly better, still cramped.
- Multi-column layouts — read in column order; confusing. Same issue as text extraction in general.
The honest alternative: if the PDF is anything beyond simple text, the Kindle is the wrong device — send it to a tablet (Kindle app on iPad/Android works great with PDFs in their original layout) or read it on the computer.
