How to Create a PDF on iPhone (The Hidden Trick)

The short answer

Create a PDF on an iPhone from almost anything — a document, a photo, a webpage, an email — with the share sheet: tap Share → Print, pinch the preview outward, and a Save as PDF option appears. It’s hidden, but it’s the single most useful PDF trick on iOS, and it works from every app.

Create a PDF from a photo

  1. Open the photo (or select several) in Photos.
  2. Tap Share → Print.
  3. Pinch outward on the print preview — the view zooms and a Save as PDF option appears above.
  4. Tap it, save to Files, done.

Multiple photos in one share action combine into a multi-page PDF automatically — the standard way to turn a photo stack into a document. Same result as images to PDF on a computer.

Create a PDF from a document or webpage

Same share-sheet flow from anywhere:

  • Webpage in Safari — Share → Print → pinch → Save as PDF. Great for receipts and articles.
  • Email in Mail — open the message, Share → Print → pinch → Save as PDF.
  • Word or Pages file — open it, Share → Print → Save as PDF, or use the app’s own export menu (Pages has Export → PDF directly).
  • Notes — Share → Print → pinch → Save as PDF.

Rule of thumb: if an app can display it, the share sheet can turn it into a PDF.

Scan paper to PDF (different job, same app)

If you’re holding paper, not a screen, use the Files app’s scanner instead: Files → three-dot menu → Scan Documents. It photographs the page, flattens it, and saves as PDF — see scanning to PDF.

The honest part

Two things about the pinch trick: it’s easy to miss the first time (you must pinch inside the preview area), and it won’t appear if the file is already open in a PDF viewer — that view uses its own share sheet. And remember the print trick captures what’s on screen: a webpage’s menus and sidebars print too unless you scroll or use Safari’s reader view first.

Also, if the goal is a PDF of a document you’ll keep editing, the share-sheet route is the wrong direction — export from the source app instead. A photo-printed PDF is a snapshot, not an editable file.
