How to Tell If a Drawing Is AI (Honestly, It’s Getting Harder)

Honest answer: you can’t be 100% sure a drawing is AI by eye anymore. But when you’re asking is this image AI generated, a few signals still catch most of them.

Hands and fingers: the classic tell

Hands are the best starting point. Extra fingers, fused fingers, thumbs on the wrong side — the model knows a hand should be there, it just doesn’t always know what it looks like. Short version: newer models are much better, so clean hands are a vote for human, not proof.

Garbled text and melting backgrounds

AI still can’t spell reliably. Street signs, book spines, chalkboard menus — zoom in and the letters blur or turn into a font nobody owns. Backgrounds are the same: bushes that melt into wallpaper, chairs with five legs, reflections that don’t match. When the subject looks great and everything around it falls apart, that’s one of the most reliable ai art telltale signs.

Repeating textures and watermark ghosts

Brick walls that tile perfectly, grass that repeats in a grid — real artists rarely make repeats that neat. Then check the corners: many tools stamp a faint watermark, and the model copies the pattern without understanding it. Detection tools help — trust them less

Want to detect ai art more systematically? Tools like Hive or AI or Not exist, and they beat a coin flip. But they’re not perfect — they flag real photos as AI and miss lightly edited images. My take: use them as a tiebreaker, not a verdict. And when everything looks clean, ask where the image came from — provenance beats pixels for copyright checks and scam-spotting.
