How to Fill Out a PDF on iPhone (Fields or Scans)
The short answer
Fill out a PDF on an iPhone with the built-in Files app: open the PDF, tap the pencil icon, and add text boxes, checkmarks, and signatures right on the page. Fill a form with real fields (the easy case)
- Open the PDF in the Files app.
- Tap a field — the keyboard appears and you type.
- Tap the next field to jump to it. Checkboxes tap to check.
- Save, then share the filled form.
Real fillable fields just work on iPhone, no apps needed. If the fields don’t respond, the PDF is either a scan or the form’s viewer is being difficult — both handled below.
Fill a scanned or field-less form
Most paper forms arrive as scans — plain pages with printed lines, no fields. The iPhone method:
- Open the PDF in Files, tap the pencil icon (top right) for markup.
- Tap the + button → Text, and place a text box on each answer line.
- For checkboxes, draw a checkmark with the pen tool or paste a ✓ symbol.
- Tap Done. The filled page is saved.
It’s not as tidy as a real form — text boxes won’t snap to the printed lines — but it’s accepted everywhere. Budget a few minutes per page.
The honest part
Two practical notes: (1) If the form demands a signature, tap the + button → Signature and draw it once — it’s saved for every future form (the full flow is in signing on iPhone). (2) Long forms are miserable on a small screen — for anything over a couple of pages, fill it on a computer or tablet and use the phone for quick signatures. And remember: a form filled with typed text still needs a real signature if it says “original signature required” — no app changes that rule.
